It might occur at the top of a ski lift, or when I’m getting ready for some serious mulled wine tasting, but every ski trip it happen’s. It’s the moment that you realise you haven’t got it. That completely essential thing. You remembered your ski jacket, you remembered your snow boots, so how on earth did you forget?

But don’t worry, you’re not the only one. Here are the ten most forgotten essentials for a skiing holiday, all in a handy list, so you’ll never them forget again!

1) Ski Gloves

Without gloves, your fingers will fall off. FACT. Okay, maybe not, but they will get very cold and painfull

2) Sun Protection Cream

Back in the UK, using sun cream in midwinter seems like something only the most obsessively sun-wary people would do. But trust me, you will need it at altitude & because sunlight reflects off snow.

3) Ski Socks

Ski socks are completely different to normal socks& if you’ve experienced the ultimate pain of freezing toes and multiple blisters from wearing normal socks in ill-fitting rental ski boots, you would never do it again.

4) First Aid Kit

Goes without saying!

5) Sunglasses &/or Goggles

Sun and snow is a blinding combo & you can also permanently damage your eyesight without adequate eye protection & you will absolutely need goggles if you get caught in a snowstorm.

6) Lip Balm

Having dry, sunburnt, chapped lips is never a good look, so making sure you have a good lip balm with SPF in will keep them ready for any après-ski activities. And no, normal sun cream doesn’t work ‘just as good’ – lips need extra moisture.

7) Water Pouch

Supping a beer or seven in a alpine setting is a wonderful thing but waking up with a hangover isn’t. Staying hydrated is a neccessity A water pouch orhydration system can be fitted easily into your Rucksack, ski jacket or ski trouser pockets.

Thermals

Seen thermal sets for £4.99? Believe me no one can stay warm once it hits -20°C without some decent thermal underwear. Our sets are designed for skiing & use technical materials designed tokeep you comfortable – Stay away from cotton & go for man made fabrics or Merino Wool
It ain’t pretty, but long johns are an essential.

9) Plug Adaptor

One thing we all seem to forget is that other countries have different plugs. So ifyou wantto keep using your phone, camera or ipod you best remember your charger.

10) Insurance

Breaking your leg on a mountainside is never going to be fun, but it’s even less fun when you realise that you now have to pay the hospital several thousand Euros for a plaster cast and a lift in an ambulance.

The best value destination in the Post Office’s latest annual Ski Resort Report, is Bansko, as sterling buys 7.5% more Bulgarian lev this winter than last.

Meanwhile, those visiting Swiss resorts will be 4.6% better off – an improvement on last year when a plunging pound bought 9.1% fewer Swiss francs than in 2010.

The Ski Resort Report compares the cost of a ski pass, ski boot hire, ski school, a large coffee, small Coke, 50cl glass of wine, 25cl glass of beer and a two course lunch on the slopes.

In a preview of the latest report, which launches at the end of next month, there were identified eight resorts where budget-conscious skiers will get the most for their money this season.

They are: Bansko, where the total cost of the items comes to £264.52; Kranjska Gora, Slovenia (£324.99); Ellmau, Austria (£356.74); Livigno, Italy (£361.85); Soldeu, Andorra (£402.19); Ruka, Finland (£402.63); Morzine, France (£442.98); and Nendaz, Switzerland (£508.91).

‘Seasoned skiers may have their favourite resorts and stick with them whatever the fluctuation in prices, but bargain hunters, especially novice or intermediate skiers, are more likely to look for the cheapest deal. In this case there’s no doubting that Eastern European resorts will be a great bet.

‘However, while skiing is cheapest in Bulgaria and Slovenia, our research shows that there is good value to be found in long-established favourites, Austria and Italy, providing you choose your resort carefully.

‘And skiers heading to Europe have the added bonus of up to 7.5% more currency for their pounds this year due to the strengthening of sterling.’

So what’s new this time? Well for starters it’s now open 7 days a week (Mon-Sat 9-5pm & Sunday 10-4pm)
There’s more than twice as much outdoor display area & to top it off just in case the heavens open we now have a huge range of tents & accessories in our 5000 sq ft mega showroom.

The inside area is home to all our quick erect models, they include Vango’s prestige Airbeam tents (there’s 5 of them on display – all available for us/you to demo)

Coleman are there too with thier Instant tents that can be erected in less than 1 minute & as usual Gelert have the Quikpitch tents that pop up instantly, perfect for festival goers.
The showstopper has to be the Vw Campervan tent, it’s a scale model, split screen camper for under £300, super cool & much cheaper than the real thing. Moving upstairs you meet some of our more technical tents that are aimed at scouts, DofE users backpackers & mountaineers, we also have an area dedicated to erect the technical tents that are not on display, thus enabling customers to get a feel for the tent before they buy.
